    Roger: A Seamless Recovery

Roger was admitted to a short-term acute care hospital in Lexington after a motor vehicle accident in May 2010. His hospital course included treatment for multiple fractures requiring surgery. He developed respiratory failure resulting in prolonged mechanical ventilation, experienced cardiac arrest three times, developed clots and wound ulcers.

As a result of his complex medical condition Roger was unable to wean from the ventilator after multiple attempts and a tracheotomy was performed. Roger’s wounds required ongoing debridements and care, and a regimen of IV antibiotics.

After four months at the short-term acute care hospital, Roger was unable to completely recover and required ongoing acute care. He was recommended for transfer to Kindred Hospital Louisville for continued ventilator weaning, aggressive wound care and medical management.

He transferred on September 24, 2010. Once admitted to Kindred Hospital, our interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists and specialists were able to successfully wean Roger from the ventilator. His wounds progressed to a more manageable state and rehabilitation services helped him increase his stamina, endurance and strength.

Through our team’s aggressive medical management, Roger was able to discharge from Kindred Hospital Louisville in January 2011. He continued his progression along the continuum of care, transferring to Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation – Northfield in Louisville.

While at Northfield, Roger continued with trach plugging exercises and rehabilitation therapies for muscle strengthening. Roger eventually was decannulated and discharged home to Tennessee in April 2011.

In Louisville, the Kindred network consists of two long-term acute care (LTAC) hospitals, seven nursing centers, a subacute unit and outpatient rehabilitation services. Together they offer an uninterrupted spectrum of care for post-acute and subacute patients. Our goal is to provide quality care that meets a range of needs and to make the admission process as streamlined as possible.
